Assignment 5b

REFLECTION
Choose any 1 classmate of project 4 that wrote about an entirely different set of authors and
use the following format in a blog post.

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
Shannon Mullen, component a My California authors - Ode to CalTrans by Hector Tobar

What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
In Shannon's story she talks of spanning the bridge from Oakland to San Francisco, and going to Treasure Island where she can see the entire city and all of the bay from there. That quiet little island, where nothing really happens, it seems out of place next to San Francisco, one of the major cities in the United States. These places relate to projects 2-3 because I live around there, I visit these areas on a weekly basis, and I never sit back and take the time to enjoy where I really am, and the sights they bring.

3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
I did not realize before that the bridge going from Oakland to San Francisco was 4 miles long, that seems pretty long to be a bridge I would have thought. Traveling on it the few time I have, it has not seemed to span 4 miles, but i'm sure it really is.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
I have never been to Treasure Island, and I would love to go their and relax and take in the sights, watching the chaos in San Francisco and listening to the birds chirp in the trees on the island. I think this relates to Freire's ideas because I never thought that there was an island like this that I could go and watch San Francisco from that point of view, even after living here all my life i have only walked the Golden Gate once, I need to get out more.

5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
From projects 2 and 3, I really learned about California, and the different places that are in it, my eyes have been opened to things I never knew before, like the center of Los Angeles is a desolate place on a hill top, not a freeway which I would have thought it might have been. After learning so much about California, with reading the stories of so many different places in California I can really relate the real life places to the stories and get the full benefit behind them. Knowing where you live and the beauty that it beholds is a wonderful thing.

Assingment 5a, Group C

1. The Un-California - Daniel Weintraub
2. This short story by Daniel Weintraub is about Sacramento. Sacramento, being a beautiful, growing city is considered Un-Californian because of the way of life here. People are considered to be almost equals, the rich living close to the poor, the fact that there are no hills to overlook the town, so the super rich can not be the elite and look over the city as if it is theirs, everyone is on the same plane. The weather is nice, and people are not upset or angry when it rains, they understand that in order for them to continue their way of agricultural life, that they need a fair amount of everyone, sun, rain, and clouds. Sacramento is a little bit of everything, but not like the rest of our beautiful California State.
3. My Favorite sentences are "It's not as if the city's streets are now crowded with Hummers. And those you do see tend to be spattered with ud, ust back from a trip to the mountains. Around these parts, people actually drive them there." because I think that this is so true, people buy these big trucks and SUV's and just travel around town. They are such a waste of gas and money, the only real use for them should be in the snow or high mountains.
4. This reading made me think about how places can change so quickly. Santa Rosa used to be a pretty small, not to busy, quiet town. Now Santa Rosa is becoming a commuter town, with thousands of residents, and houses and buildings going up everywhere, like Sacramento. Sacramento didn't use to be so big, but like everywhere else, its growing to be a monster. Appartments in the city are starting to be placed around, and the whole downtown area is starting to look almost like San Francisco. It is just crazy how things can change so dramatically.
5. I did not know that Sacramento had 2 rivers running through it, the Sacramento river and the American river. Driving through Sacramento, I had only ever seen one river, and knowing that its almost always hot there, I think that having these two rivers there is probably a big help to most people looking to cool off.

1. Rocks in the Shape of Billy Martin - by Deanne Stillman
2. This short story is about the Mojave desert, and all the possibilities it can bring. The Mojave is a place of silitude, a place where you can go and think about whatever you want. The desert is an empty place where any of your dreams can come true, where you can talk to the wilderness, and the wilderness will talk to you. It brings you close to nature, and with that, you feel one with yourself and humanity.
3. My favorite sentence is "I know I am close to the Mojave when the L.A. radio stations fade from Grammy Award winners to Christian advice shows and I start receiving tansmissions of other bearded evangelicals, primarily Z.Z. Top" This is my favorite because I think that it is funny how peoples interests change throughout the state, people in the desert could not give a rats butt about the Grammy's, but they love their good ol' Z.Z. Top music.
4. This reading made me think about how I need to find myself my own personal place of solitude. Somewhere where there is now distractoins, no noise, nothing but good old nature and what it brings. Somewhere where i can think and act as I please, no one to conform to.
5. I have always heard of the Mojave desert, but I never knew where it was, but now i know that it is in California. California seems to have everything, the ocean, the forest, the desert, and many beautiful lakes, it has everything you could want.

1. How many angles - by David Kipen
2. This story is about Los Angeles, and the center of everything. The center of things are not usually what we think they should be, as in this story, David thought the center of Los Angeles should be a freeway, but in reality the center is not even a paved road. Things are not usually what we perceive them to be, we should all venture out and find things out for ourselves.
3. My favorite sentence was "the geometric center of anything is never what or where you think it is" This is my favorite because it seems so true, nothing is ever what it appears to be, you just have to go through with it, and find out the circumstances of your actions.
4. The reading made me think of life, and the fact that we do not know everything. There is always, and will always be the unknown, and that is what makes life interesting. Going out and discovering things for yourself, and finding what really makes you happy is what life is about.
5. I also thought the center of Los Angeles would be somewhere very populated, with freeways and building surrounding it, but in fact the center is this quiet, non residential area, a beautiful sanctuary.

1. Centered - by Veronique de Turenne
2. This short story is about the trip to the center of California. California, being the busy, populated, beautiful state would seem to have a center filled with cars and phones and freeways, but at the center of California, there is nothing. Just the vast wildlife, and rolling hills, and the green pastures. The wildlife is just afraid of you as you are afraid of it, and this is a place where I want to be, a place to watch the sun set with nothing around to bother you.
3. My favorite sentece is "In a state this big, where the holy trinity of Smogland, fogland, and logland divide us, what could the geographic center possibly look like?" This is so true because everywhere in caifornia is all poluted now, smog covering the hills and sky, I want to find a place like this where there is no smog, where there is no cell phones, nothing but lush beautiful scenery.
4. This reading made me think of how poluted and distant from the earth we are. We are not in touch with it, we are the destroyers of it. We need to start realizing this, and change our ways, we need to enjoy the outdoors and the rolling hills instead of wasting our life watching tv and seeing the same sights, everything is more beautiful in person, and we need to see them before they are destroyed by our stupidity.
5. Before reading this, I never knew where Highway 49 led, now i know that it leads through the Sierra foothills, leading to Downieville, the center of California. I am going to have to go there since it is so close!

Assignment 4c - Reflection

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
Yesenia Chavez, Component B Beaches, San Diego
http://yeseniachavez.blogspot.com/2008/10/3b-beaches-goatrock-beach-san-diego.html

2. What is something similar this classmate said about the choice?
Yesenia and I both agree that San Diego beaches, including Mission beach San Diego, are very popular beaches, and very much tourist destinations. People flock from all over the world to visit San Diego and swim in its warm, inviting waters. The surfing and atmosphere is so fun and inviting, everyone will want to stay.

3. What is something different this classmate said about the choice?
Yesenia mentioned that the beaches in San Diego are protected under the law as a state park, and that might answer the question I had on why the people attending the beaches could not bring animals or food into the park. I thought state parks were 0nly in the foresty areas, pertaining to a lot of wild life, i did not know that state parks also reached over beaches and the aquatic life in our beautiful country.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
Not understanding why dogs, food and fire were not permitted at San Diego beaches and other beaches in southern california were answered right away when i found out from Yesenia that these beaches were under state regulation as state parks, and therefor were monitered and kept on close watch by state officials and troopers. Having this protection over the land and beaches not only keeps the beaches clean, but helps to keep the environment, and our sea life thriving.

Assignment 4b - Reflection

Choose any 1 classmate of project 3 that wrote about your same topic in any one component (a World Cities, b Beaches, c Inland Areas) and briefly compare/contrast their choices using the following format in a blog post:
1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
Jessica, Component a World Cities, Los Angeles
http://jessica-srjchuman7.blogspot.com/

2. What is something similar this classmate said about the choice?
Jessica and I both focused our responses on how Los Angeles is one of the leading music and telivision producing capitols in the United States. When we both thought of Los Angeles, we thought of plastic surgery, blondes, and surfers everywhere. We thought that if the people were not already in the industry, that they were attempting to join in.

3. What is something different this classmate said about the choice?
Jessica focused some on the history of Los Angeles, saying its history dating back to 1850 after the Mexican/American war was won and California and Los Angeles was granted to be part of the United States. I thought this was a good idea to throw in its history, while I focused more on the attitude and life style there in Los Angeles.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
When I talked about the music industry, and the culture and arts in Los Angeles, Jessica taught me about the history and the fashion and shopping in Los Angeles. Her response opened up my eyes to the other major industries in Los Angeles, the shopping industry. So no matter what a person is into, there is a little somthing for everyone here; with the shopping and arts and history and theater and movies and thrills and the stars, there is Los Angeles, a beautiful sunshine city.

Big River beach and mission beach both connect to my study of humanities because both have such different atmosopheres, weather and waves. Mission beach is a busy, sunny, tourist paradise, while Big River beach is mostly local, friendly, surfing or dog walking people. The atmosphere is much less chaotic, and the life on the beach is beautiful. You can meet anyone from a local artist to a restaurant owner to a homeless man enjoying the scene.

Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think people judge mission beach as being a busy, shopping friendly area. When i think of mission beach i think of volleyball, sun, and beautiful girls. Little River beach i think of dedicated surfers, roasting smors on an open fire, and enjoying the beautiful scenery that mendocino has to offer.

List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Both mission beach and Little River beach share the surfing attitude, and a love for the waves.
Both share great dining within a mile of the beach itself, with a variety to choose from.
Both have volley ball set up on their beaches, in Little River it is just a little less frequent.

List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
Little river is more of a local attraction, no real tourists come to mendocino for the beach.
Little river attracts many skimboarders instead of surfers because of the cold weather.
On mission beach you can not start fires, bring your dog, or have food on the beaches, in Little River, your dog can come, you can start fires, and you can roast and whatever you like, as long as you clean it up.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know for a fact that you can not bring your dog onto mission beach, but why is this? Is it because too many people did not pick up after their dog? I would really like to know.

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? I looked at Debbie Lee's profile and found her work on Silicon valley. I found out alot that i did not know about california. Mostly when i think of world leaders in technology or most expensive living, i think of Lost Angeles or San Francisco, but after reading about Silicon valley and sunnyvale and palo alto, i learned alot that i did now know before. Silicon valley and Palo Alto being some of the wealthies and snobby places to live. They think they are the smartest there because of stanford, and residents have to have a high income in order to survive there.

Learning of both Mendocino California and Los Angeles California, I determined that they are similar in a few ways, but different in a majority of ways. Mendocino is much known for their beliefs in the green ways of life, and in living life surrounded by art. Every street in town has atleast one gallery to look at, so no matter what kind of art your interested in, you'll find your taste here. They are mostly known to be kind, warm, peacefull people. Los Angeles on the other term is known for their artistic ways in a different kind of medium, in film. Los Angeles contains some of the most famous film studios and music recording studios, and houses some of the most famous stars in hollywood. The movie stars are sometimes what we dream about, hopefully about someday becoming, they are what some aspire to be.

Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point
I think that Mendocino is mostly known to be a "hippy" town, most of the residence believe in living green, growing their own vegetables and fruits and plants, and buying groceries from a small town grocery market. They are known to be kind and give rides to hitch hikers, and they are advocates in the legalization of Marijuana. Los Angeles residence are known to be rude, crazy drivers, and beach lovers. They have stereotypes of the rich and wealthy, and movie stars seen everywhere, but in reality Los Angeles consists of mostly poor minorities struggling along to make a living and support their families. Los angeles is also known for attractive peoples of all ages, since so much plastic surgery is practiced in this area.

List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point
Both Mendocino and Los Angeles are located next to the ocean, so they are known to be surfing comunities.
Both Mendocino and Los Angeles are known for their artistic communities, Mendocino for their paintings, sculptures, and metal work, and Los Angeles for their music recording, motion picture and television recordings.
Both Mendocino and Los Angeles have many residence practicing the green movement and believe in the legalization of Marijuana.

List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point
Mendocino is known for is small community, while Los Angeles is known to be one of the largest cities in the world.
Mendocino has little crime and theft, while Los Angeles is one of the most dangerous places to live, with a very high crime rate.
Mendocino's community is known for being kind, helping out the helpless, and giving rides to those in need; Los Angeles is known for their rudeness, their crazy eratic driving, and their self centered ways.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point
I know that both Mendocino and Los Angeles have people working for the green movement, but in reality, how helpfull is Mendocino's contribution to the cure when its occupance is less than one thousand people, and Los Angeles's houses close to four million people?

I read about Russels trip to the Superbowl. Reading about this, i learned that the superbowl is the second largest food consumption day in the US. Football and the superbowl is watched by millions all over the world, and football, being the number one sport in the US, is a great part of history and our human nature. We get agression out by watching these people hit and compete with eachother, and it is very entertaining. Everyone from the poor to the rich, from man to woman, watches football on this special, once a year event.

2c - My dog Mochi

Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points
Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points
Personal experience, my dog mochi is the source needed for this report.
Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
Mochi, my great 9 month old puppy dog, connects to my study of humanities because adopting and taking care of another creature in this life is a huge commitment. Dogs in the past were primarily used for hunting, or as protection, now in days dogs and humans are "best friends" because of the levels of trust and commitment that is being put into the relationship between dog and owner. We are reaching new levels of bonding and understanding between our two species, dogs are becoming ever more popular, and i will always love them, and my own puppy, Mochi.

Contains the following "analytical elements":
Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I chose my dog mochi, she is a nine month old mixbreed of german shepherd and lab. She is a beautiful, sleek, spontanious animal, always loving to get into trouble, and giving me the cutest looks when she does. She is tan with black all over her back and face, creating a look of eyebrows, which makes her look like she is making faces at me sometimes. She has looks of passion, of trust, of love, of fear, of curiosity, of understanding, of want, all the things that humans feel and need. Her reactions mimic my own sometimes, making me think that someday she will grow up to be like me, but a dog. She is my best friend, she is my puppy, my baby, Mochi.

Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
My dog mochi is about teaching me how to be a better person and friend. Mochi is the kindest, sweetest young thing i could ever ask for, and if i am upset, she makes me smile, she teaches me to be a better person. Her excitement for any new thing inspires me to have an open mind for new experiences, not to be affraid, but to jump in head of heels and enjoy the life givin to me just like she does. She lives without regrets, i want to do the same.

Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I chose my dog mochi because she is a huge part of my life. When i'm not at school or at work, i am with her, either at the park, schools, or walking around just enjoying time spent with her. She never asks to much of me, she never makes me upset, she never intentionally hurts me in any way, her only goal in life is to live, and that is what inspires me. She does not have any regrets, she does what she wants when she wants, which is what i need to get back in touch with. Thinking about consequences just slows us down, we need to start acting on impulses and whats right instead of sitting and thinking everything out. We need to get back in touch with our animal instincts, and that is what i hope mochi will help me do. I love me dog mochi, and will take care of her no matter what.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
I know that a dog can learn a new trick, to roll over or sit or shake. I know that they can determine for themselves whether to go to the bathroom inside the house or outside the house, but is it the consequence of their action that leads them to their decision, or is it pure animal instinct that drives them?

I chose to pick Andrea Pruett's observation of "California Academy of Sciences" because of the sheer interest in sparked in me. The fact that you can see aligators found in florida to birds and wildlife found in africa to creatures pulled deep out of the sea, anything and everything is here. The Academy of Sciences brings new experiences to those looking for them, those who can not go to the rain forests in africa can take a trip here and experience the same things, see the same sights, and feel the same things. The Academy opens our eyes to dangers in the environment, and the importance of the protection of every species on this planet, everything was put here for a reason, so lets keep things just how nature intended them to be, perfect.

2b california state railroad museum

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Railroad_Museum
http://www.csrmf.org/default.asp
  1. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
The California State Train Museum connects to my study of humanities because it is a record of what we have accomplished throughout history. Without the railroad systems throughout the United States of America we would not be here today, the railroads brought us here. Looking at the trains and the labor that was put into them is astonishing, all the lives that were lost in the trans-atlantic railroad that was built, all the hard manual labor that led to us today. All the different ethnicities that worked together on one single goal, to create an easier and more affordable way to travel. Without the railroad systems, things would be much different, and our culture would surely change.

Walking around and through the California State Railroad Museum is amazing. The sounds of whistels blowing, the smell of fresh coals, the sight of hundreds of trains around you, it is quite amazing. Taking a tour on a steam engine, feeling and hearing the knotches in the tracks, realizing your standing on a historical machine. The machine is big, looks almost angry, dark, cold to the touch, and shoots out steam from the top, and has a one track mind, sounds like the devil to me, but this machine is a train, and is our reason for existence still today.
  1. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
My choice is the California State Railroad Museum because the "iron horse" was the key to connecting California to the rest of our great nation. Without the creation of the trains and railroad systems, our technology could not have advanced as quickly or as remarkably as it had, we would still be using horse and buggy.
  1. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I chose the California State Railroad museum because it led us to where we are today. Trains were the most influential technological advance in history, we have to thank them for what we have. The museum has many records of trains, has pictures, information, and trains themselves on display for our amazement. Their sheer size is something to awe about, they can carry more ten they weigh, amazing.

I learned from reading and looking at the museum that we have technologically advanced from coal power to steam power to gas and now electric and even solar powered, what is the next power source thats going to run this great nation?

I chose to pick Scott Sandine's trip to Yosemite. I learned from reading about his trip just how big the park is, a staggering 1,200 mile squar mile park, amazing. I knew it was big because as a kid my family and I attempted to climb Half Dome at Yosemite, which was a full day trip, from dusk till dawn. The park is a historical park, and hopefully will be kept clean and beautiful for my children to enjoy as a child in the years to come. Its amazing sights are some of the most breath-taking in the world, Yosemite is trully a wonder of the world.

Assignment 5c

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
Carly Overlid, Component 4a, "The nicest person in California" by Derek Powazek

2. What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
This story talks about a persons first trip outside of his comfort zone. Derek, at the age of seventeen, planned his first trip to San Francisco, to encounter all the diversity in the great city. The trip, as he soon realized, was not all that he thought it would turn out to be, he encounters a lot of trouble in the big city, and the only nice person he meets is the ticket counter person.

3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
In this persons story, they talk about how everyone is angry and mean in San Francisco, I know that its a busy city, but i would not think that everyone is mean. In my experiences there in San Francisco i have met a lot of grumpy people, but the majority are average people.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
I thought that every city had about the same diverse crowd, Carly thinks that the whole city of San Francisco is full of angry people, so i realized that maybe because of all the chaos, traffic, and work going on in the city, if this was the reason behind all the madness in the city.

5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
The assignments in projects 2 and 3 helped me learn about San Francisco, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and other major cities in California. Learning about these cities helped me with the readings, in understanding the dynamics in each city and the diversity in each. Learning about the places before the readings of them helped me to understand the readings better, and made the readings easier.

Assignment 1b

Paulo Freire, born in 1921, was an extraordinary person. His journey through the educational system in Brazil showed him poverty at first hand. His views of education and the connection of the student and teacher relationship seemed as one, the student was just as important as the teacher. His ideals of "banking" and bringing knowledge to the students. His quotes and literatures left behind still inspire and guide people today.
With Paulo's many accomplishments, it was no surprise when the mayor of Recife assigned Freire to be the leader of an adult literacy program for their town. In Paulo's first experiment for the company, he "taught 300 adults to read and write in forty five days." With his growing fame and his everlasting knowledge of teaching and learning the president of Brazil gave him the job of leading the National Literacy Program whose high success was expected to enroll approximately two million students in the year 1964. His fame and his teachings not only were in Brazil, but ranged even here to the United States.
Not only did Paulo Freire have literature in Brazil, but his books reached out and touched people around the world. "Freire wrote 25 books which were translated into 35 languages and was an honorary professor of 28 universities around the world" His knowledge leads him to the idea that illiteracy was the reason that there was poverty in the world. Freire's lectures and video's all demonstrate his commitment to the end of poverty and the beginning of equality for all. His preaching’s still motivating many people today.
