Assignment 5b

REFLECTION
Choose any 1 classmate of project 4 that wrote about an entirely different set of authors and
use the following format in a blog post.

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
Shannon Mullen, component a My California authors - Ode to CalTrans by Hector Tobar

What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
In Shannon's story she talks of spanning the bridge from Oakland to San Francisco, and going to Treasure Island where she can see the entire city and all of the bay from there. That quiet little island, where nothing really happens, it seems out of place next to San Francisco, one of the major cities in the United States. These places relate to projects 2-3 because I live around there, I visit these areas on a weekly basis, and I never sit back and take the time to enjoy where I really am, and the sights they bring.

3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
I did not realize before that the bridge going from Oakland to San Francisco was 4 miles long, that seems pretty long to be a bridge I would have thought. Traveling on it the few time I have, it has not seemed to span 4 miles, but i'm sure it really is.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
I have never been to Treasure Island, and I would love to go their and relax and take in the sights, watching the chaos in San Francisco and listening to the birds chirp in the trees on the island. I think this relates to Freire's ideas because I never thought that there was an island like this that I could go and watch San Francisco from that point of view, even after living here all my life i have only walked the Golden Gate once, I need to get out more.

5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
From projects 2 and 3, I really learned about California, and the different places that are in it, my eyes have been opened to things I never knew before, like the center of Los Angeles is a desolate place on a hill top, not a freeway which I would have thought it might have been. After learning so much about California, with reading the stories of so many different places in California I can really relate the real life places to the stories and get the full benefit behind them. Knowing where you live and the beauty that it beholds is a wonderful thing.
